Leanne Cochrane, Lina Jasmontaite-Zaniewicz and David Barnard-Wills co-authorised an article examining awareness raising duties of data protection authorities (DPAs) in European Data Protection Law Review. Based on the findings of numerous interviews conducted for the STAR II project on the awareness raising practices of DPAs, especially through the lens of Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the authors suggest that a closer cooperation between DPAs and SME associations is desirable. It potentially could result in DPA guidance that addresses unique compliance challenges of SMEs.

STAR II consortium co-organised a panel session at Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference in 2020, titled: The GDPR is easy: (Un)tangling SME compliance hurdles.

The panel identifies distinct needs of SMEs and then turns to discuss the ways in which public and private actors could help SMEs to move from a relatively good level of awareness to actual compliance with the GDPR. The speakers provide contributions responding to the following questions:

  • What are the perceived distinct GDPR related needs of SMEs?
  • What kind of assistance could SMEs expect and demand from DPAs?
  • What traditional and alternative (e.g. AI) solutions facilitating GDPR compliance for SMEs are available on the market?
  • What’s the perspective of an SME owner?
